ECE497PM Projects
Scope of the projects
The project will allow you to explore some area of your choice
in statistical image processing. Towards the end of the semester you will
give a 12' class presentation of the project (followed by 3' of questions)
and prepare a short written report (5-12 pages, plus appendices). Your report
should include the following elements: an abstract, an introduction clearly
stating the goals of the project and the context in which it takes place,
a technical section, and a list of bibliographic references. You may want
to use (good) papers from the Proceedings of ICIP as examples of technical
writing in this area. Computer code should be available upon request.
You can team up with another student if you wish. In this case, the project
will be allocated more time for presentation. Each student should
present the part of the material that he or she is primarily responsible
for, and the contribution of each student to the project should
be clearly summarized in a separate section of the written report.
-
The project may include activities such as experimentation with actual imaging
systems, computer simulations, theoretical analyses, and bibliographic study.
It is of course recommended that the project involve experiments with real
images. However, a purely theoretical project involving a proof of concept
on synthetic images would also be acceptable -- for instance, studying
the mathematical properties of a particular class of Markov random fields.
In any case, the nature of the project should be consistent with the broad
goals stated in the Introduction of the ECE497PM lecture notes.
You will be expected to explain the benefits and limitations
of a statistical approach to the problem you have chosen.
-
If you need access to a particular piece of equipment (e.g., an image
scanner, some piece of software, etc.), arrangements can be made
for you to use the resources of the Image Lab at the Beckman Institute.
-
In order to maximize the likelihood that your project is successful,
you are required to submit by November 12 a 1-2 page proposal
in which you define the broad area of the project, the nature of the work
involved, and a work plan. Please submit TWO copies of your proposal.
You will receive feedback by November 17. You should also feel free
to contact me before, during and after the course of this project
if you need help.
-
Have fun!
