Histology of Human Tongue

Images are coronal slices through a 1cm block of excised tongue tissue, stained with tricolor stain. Muscle tissue is red; glandular tissue blue; adipose tissue is primarily clear. Locator tubes were used to create two holes through the tissue sample prior to MRI of the same tissue block. In the images shown below, holes are sometimes hard to see, but are always located in the upper right and lower left of the image. These slices were sectioned and mounted at the University of Iowa, after MR imaging at the University of Illinois. See microscopic MRI of this same tissue block at http://www.ifp.uiuc.edu/speech/mri/coronal_micro.
